Parents' Corner: What School Taught Me About Life
Three TLS Rohtak parents look back on their own school days — and what still guides them today.

This issue's Parents' Corner takes a slightly different angle: instead of writing about their children's school life, three TLS Rohtak parents looked back on their own — and what it actually taught them, years on.
Mrs. Tanu, Maheera's mother, writes that a school is a building with four walls holding our tomorrow, and the best memories of a life. For her, school wasn't just textbooks and exams — it was a wild ride of learning, growth, and figuring out who she wanted to become. The single biggest lesson, she says, was discipline: the value of routines, timelines, rules, and accountability, learned from the first day of school and carried through every day since. Alongside it came teamwork, stress management, and the value of friendship — the people who made life easier simply by being there to share it.
Mrs. Jyoti Ahlawat, Yakshitha's mother, credits school with teaching her far more than what was in the books: discipline, punctuality, and the plain fact that success comes from practice and patience. Her teachers taught her to respect elders, help others, and never give up after failure, while friendships taught teamwork, sharing, and how to hold a different opinion without losing the friendship over it. Above everything else, she says, school taught her honesty and responsibility — the two lessons she leans on most as an adult.
Dr. Meenakshi, Vedansh's mother, remembers school teaching her to follow rules properly, show up on time, and finish her work — alongside the quieter lessons: respecting elders, listening carefully, speaking politely. She learned to share, care, and work as part of a team, and just as importantly, that mistakes are how learning actually happens, not something to fear. School gave her the confidence to speak in front of others, and the honesty, kindness, and persistence she still relies on today.
Three parents, three different memories, the same underlying point: school life doesn't just teach a syllabus. It quietly writes the operating manual you use for the rest of your life.
